A Month of Home School Reading Curriculum for Toddlers
The book this week is by far one of my favorite books. We bought it at a local book store when it was closing (sad I know). I always read kids books if I don’t know them before we buy them and this one made me laugh so I knew it would be a hit. Big plus it was about cows and Adella just loves cows!

Man we have been doing this for a month already!! Wow, that went way fast and we are still loving it. This week we picked a book that had to do with farm animals since we were going to be going to the fair! Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type
This book is not only great for toddlers as it is funny, but it is great for those starting to read as it has repetitive phrase that can be a big confidence booster. As soon as they recognize it is the same words and they read it encourage them don’t just say good job, say “Wow, you worked really hard. Lets see what’s on the next page”.
We colored of course, but I am all about free drawing not coloring pages. Not to say there is anything wrong with coloring pages, and we use them once in awhile, but Adella is a very logical child and I like to make sure uses her imagination whenever possible. You could do cow pictures but we just used a black piece of paper and a white crayon, chalk would have totally been fun too!
We of course had to find a way to include Delta in to our project. She is learning too, but coloring with a one year old last about 3 seconds before you are brushing crayon out of her teeth! Don’t ask me how I know that! HAHA
So we did paint bags! Just add a squirt of paint in a zip lock bag and let them squish it and rub it with their fingers. We did black and white for our “cow” and of course ended up with grey, but she had so much fun just squeezing the cold paint in her hands. What a great hands on activity it turned in to!
The best part was it wasn’t just for Delta. Adella wanted her own bag of paint! I did black and white for her bag too and we talked about what color we thought it would make if we mixed it and she rubbed the paint with her finger.
She then discovered how fun it was to use the crayon because it pushed the paint around. They both played for a solid 10 minutes while I folded a load of laundry, I mark that as a mommy win!!
I wanted to help her write a letter a farmer, but she was far from interested in that and if we had a typewriter we so would have played with that daily!!
If you read my previous post you know we had the fair in town this week so we had the pleasure of going to see all the animals from our book! We have pasture around our house so we get so cow all the time and the girls just love them. So activities this week were really easy and abundant!
During our book reading we talked about if animals get blankets and how cows make milk and chickens lay the eggs we eat. Adella just said “noooooo” every time. And cows have “meme” HAHA that’s what she calls breast milk and we watch calves nurse almost every day so she says the milk is for them. I don’t think she quite understood what eggs are exactly. But it made the book more fun!
We read the book every day and by the end of the week she was saying “Click, Clack, Moo” at the right times!!! All of this is working up to her reading on her own and I am just loving this process!
